KTM & Husqvarna Recall Certain 690/701 Enduro & Other LC4 Models

Recall underway for potential clutch malfunction.

Published on 10.19.2021

While owning several brands comes with the advantage of sharing technologies across models, it also means that when something goes wrong more motorcycles can be affected. This is what the Pierer group is experiencing in the latest recall, involving KTM and Husqvarna LC4s of the model years 2018-2020. This includes the 690 Enduro R, 690 Duke, 690 SMC, 701 Enduro, 701 Supermoto, Vitpilen 701 and Svartpilen 701.

According to the company’s report, the recall was triggered due to potential damage to the seal in the clutch slave cylinder. Specifically, deviations in assembly caused damage to the bellow gasket which may impair the function of the clutch on affected motorcycles.

The issue may not be apparent on all bikes, however, owners of these models are being asked to return their machine to an authorized dealer who will inspect and, if needed, replace the clutch slave cylinder.

What Could Happen

If the bellow gasket in the clutch slave cylinder is damaged, the clutch may not disengage when the lever is pulled in. This is obviously a safety risk since it can cause the motorcycle to continue moving forward when you try to stop. It can also cause the motorcycle to move if you start it when the transmission is not in neutral (N).

Corrective Actions

Customers of affected motorcycles are being informed by a personal letter and are asked to immediately contact an authorized KTM/Husqvarna Dealer to arrange an inspection appointment. In addition, customers can check online in the ‘Service’ area of the Husqvarna Motorcycles website or KTM’s website to determine if their motorcycle is affected by this recall. The check and replacement of all parts involved will be carried out at no cost to the customer.

Yes, that is common in all recalls. That’s why there is an inspection first.

Everyone I know who has one of these models already knows about this. I changed mine to an Oberon on a 690 enduro at 1,000 miles. The stock one was falling apart. It’s a common problem. They are a couple years late with this recall.

Totally agree. I’ve just replaced the faulty xring into Oring. I’m suprised they admit guilt. But better late than never.

Not just these models either, been happening to most KTMs for over 10 years now.

I’m surprised KTM is acknowledging this at this point, better late than never.

As others said it’s been a well known issue even affecting 2016+ models. Thankfully there’s a simple fix with a $0.25 o-ring. Or a more expensive fix with an Oberon or Rekluse slave.

My clutch slave cylinder went out on my 2019 KTM 690 before I did my 600 mile oil change I was sitting at a stoplight when it went out

My 701 -19 failed for me twice and ” repaired ” under warranty.
KTM is a bad joke of a brand.
This has been a well known weakness for years.
Giving me more problems than any other bike I owned over 30 years of riding motorcycles.
