Zero Motorcycles Issues Recall on DS, FX and Other Dual Sport Models

Certain Zero motorcycle models are being recalled for power shut offs.

Published on 10.22.2020

Zero Motorcycles has issued a recall on certain dual sport models as well as other units in their street-focused line. According to the notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 64 motorcycles for the 2021 model year may be affected. Models included in the recall are the 2021 SR, S, DSR, DS, FX, and FXS.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that some models were assembled with a DC-DC converter that may have an insufficient power output margin to support all power demands. Specifically, the malfunctioning converter is unable to support operation of the anti-lock braking system (ABS), instruments, lights, indicators, and any accessories that are connected to the accessory outlet at once.

What Could Happen

The NHTSA recall report states that if the DC-DC converter’s power capacity is exceeded, it can temporarily shut off with no warning to the rider. Should this occur when the anti-lock braking system is activated, the ABS, instruments and vehicle lights would temporarily stop functioning, which could increase the risk of a crash.

How To Get It Fixed

Zero will notify owners and have dealers replace the DC-DC converter, free of charge. The remedy of this defect is for a Zero Motorcycles authorized dealer to replace the incorrect revision B DC-DC converter with the correct revision A, which is designated on the label.

The correct Revision A DC-DC converter can be distinguished from the incorrect Revision B converter by examining the label on the silver, slotted bracket end of the components.

Should you choose to ride your suspect motorcycle prior to having your dealer perform this replacement, Zero says you should be aware that this issue may occur and avoid running any accessories on the accessory outlet.

The recall is expected to begin November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Zero customer service at 1-888-841-8085. Zero’s number for this recall is SV-ZMC-021-019. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

This has now happened with my 2018 DSR at 1650 total miles.
Currently attempting to work with the manufacturer and servicing dealer to address the problem and cover the cost of the repair. I believe the issue extends beyond the recalled model year.
